How To Scrunch Straight Hair 24 Expert Tips & Tricks

straight hair waves

Give your entire look a bit of edge by giving your waves the wet look. To recreate, apply a mixture of hair gel and cream to damp hair and use a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute. Finish by sectioning hair off and using a diffuser to slowly dry the hair in place. In this guide, we’re diving deep into the world of hair scrunching, unlocking the secrets to transforming your straight strands into beautifully textured waves.

L’ANGE HAIR Salt & Sea Texturizing Spray

Twist your hair, then wrap the twisted hair around the iron (this helps create more of the textured, beachy look). The key here is to keep your hair moving to avoid clamp marks from the iron. You might traditionally think of hairspray as a final step, but the key to getting waves that last all day is actually start the look with hairspray. The queen of layered haircuts gives hers a little lived-in feel with tousled ends and beachy waves. To prep the hair, detangle, add shine, and run the Garnier Whole Blends Honey Treasures Miracle Nectar 10-in-1 Leave-In ($10) through damp strands before styling.

Hold the Hairspray

It’s also easy and you can do it before bed and wake up with beach waves. Start in one of the back quadrants and take a one-inch section of hair. Then, pull the flat iron down, gradually turning it away from your face as you move a few inches down. Add a touch of shine and tame any frizz with a nourishing hair oil. Apply a small amount to the ends of your waves to keep them glossy and healthy-looking. By preparing your hair meticulously, you’re not just setting the stage; you’re ensuring that your hair is ready to embrace the transformation ahead.

Is it possible to achieve waves with naturally straight hair?

This means that you may need to put in more effort to maintain your waves and touch them up regularly. This can be time-consuming and may require using more heat styling tools, which can lead to more damage to your hair. If you're using the right products and techniques, you can expedite the process of getting waves in straight hair. Start by using a shampoo and conditioner designed to enhance waves or add texture to the hair. Look for products that have a lightweight formula and won't weigh your hair down. After washing your hair, use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your hair while it's still wet.

Salt sprays mimic the effect of beach water on hair, providing texture and slight waves. To use a salt spray, start by spraying it evenly onto your damp hair, then scrunch your hair with your hands to encourage waves. You can let your hair air dry or use a diffuser attachment on your hairdryer to set the waves.

Step 3: Shake It Out

straight hair waves

In reality, creating these Cali-inspired loose waves involves a step-by-step process—especially if you want to keep your hair healthy and the style intact all day. The beauty of these soft waves is that they work on most hair textures—it's all about finding the right styling products to help manage the length. If your hair is looking a bit dull and weighed down, work in a shine-enhancing serum like Az Haircare's Sooth Serum ($52). When your hair is still hot from your styling tools, the texture will stretch out and fall much easier because it has yet to set.

Ultra-Long Half-Up, Half-Down With Volume

Styling stubborn straight hair can be challenging, but with the right techniques, you can coax even the most resistant locks into beautiful waves. One trick is to use smaller sections when styling and hold each curl or wave in place for a few extra seconds to help it set. Additionally, consider using a stronger hold styling product or experimenting with different styling techniques until you find what works best for your hair type. For those looking to add definition and hold to their waves, texturizing mousse is a game-changer. This lightweight foam formula helps to enhance the natural texture of your hair, making waves appear fuller and more defined. Simply apply a dollop of mousse to damp hair, scrunching as you go, and let it air dry for flawless waves that last all day.

Step 1: Play With Mousse and Mist

Its residue-free formula leaves your hair weightless, shiny, and perfectly tousled. This featherweight texture spray absorbs excess oils and leaves your hair with a touchable, matte finish. The technique does require a flat iron, so avoid using this method too often. "Depending on the person’s commitment to the process, this can take anywhere from a little over a week to a month to see real results," says Washington. "As long as you continue to follow your routine and visit your barber for upkeep, you can continue to see success with your waves."

How to Get Beachy Waves on Straight Hair (With and Without Heat)

Think of it as giving your hair a moment to solidify its newfound identity. Before diving into the world of waves, start with a clean canvas. Use a mild, hydrating shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type.

So I sought out an actual professional, i.e., celeb hairstylist Justine Marjan, and convinced her to tell me exactly how to master stick-straight hair once and for all. So before you break out those elastics for yet another topknot, try these brilliant tricks and product recommendations that'll keep curls and waves intact all day long. So there you have it, gents – the key to maintaining your wavy locks and keeping them looking their best day after day. With a solid daily care routine and a few handy tricks up your sleeve, you’ll be rocking those waves like a pro in no time. We're all about hairstyles that suit all hair types, and Iman's long-layered soft curl look fits the bill.

What you can do for something a bit more permanent is try an in-salon texturizing treatment like a digital or body wave. Fortunately, he assures today's perms are nothing like those from the '80s that were really damaging and created very tight waves. "You can get a softer result using thick curlers, so it's more about adding body. Digital waves use a special curling iron to create beachy waves that you can air dry," he says. Another drawback of getting waves in straight hair is that the results may not last long. Straight hair tends to revert back to its natural state more quickly than naturally wavy or curly hair.

Shaking out the curls rather than taking a brush to them allows the shape to straighten out more quickly, says Saviano. Just gently run your fingers around the curls without going entirely through them, and flip your hair over once or twice. This will help loosen the curls so they look the way you want them to without activating the falling process you know all too well.

Start by investing in a high-quality shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for wavy hair. These products help to hydrate your locks and enhance their natural texture, making styling a breeze. When washing your hair, be sure to focus on the roots to remove any buildup, and gently massage the scalp to stimulate blood flow and promote healthy hair growth. But here’s the thing – even if you weren’t blessed with naturally wavy locks, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to stick with straight hair forever. With the right techniques and a bit of experimentation, you can transform your straight strands into stylish waves that command attention.

Straight hair, as the name suggests, flows smoothly from the roots to the tips without any noticeable bends or curls. It tends to reflect light evenly, giving it a sleek and shiny appearance. On the other hand, wavy hair features subtle bends or waves that add volume and texture. These waves can vary in intensity, ranging from loose, beachy waves to more defined curls.

5 Ways to Make Straight Hair Wavy

This helps to prevent frizz and maintain the shape of your waves while you sleep. Alternatively, you can wrap your hair in a silk scarf or sleep on a silk pillowcase to minimize friction and reduce tangles. If you prefer a more polished, controlled look, hair pomade is your best bet. This versatile styling product adds shine and definition to your waves while providing a flexible hold that allows for easy restyling throughout the day.

Are there specific products I should use to enhance and maintain my wavy hair?

Lightweight mousses, texturizing sprays, and curl-enhancing creams are great options for scrunching straight hair. Look for products that add volume and texture without weighing your hair down. Scrunching is a great technique for adding texture and creating waves in straight hair. With the right products and methods, you can achieve beautiful, natural-looking waves.

Nourishing Oil for Shine

Think of it like preparing a canvas before creating a masterpiece – clean, primed, and ready for transformation. It’s about recognizing the natural texture and porosity of your strands. Straight hair tends to be sleek and shiny, often resistant to holding curls.

Hair Damage from Heat Styling

Clip away the top layers, starting with the bottom sections. Experiment with different techniques, barrel sizes, and styling durations to discover the wave pattern that resonates with your style. Once you’ve styled your entire mane into a wavy wonderland, allow the waves to cool before doing anything drastic.

How to Achieve Glamorous Hollywood Waves, According to Hairstylists

"Try using a very light conditioner in the shower," suggests Nunzio Saviano of the Nunzio Saviano Salon in NYC. If you're using a conditioner that's too heavy, he says, it's going to contribute to your hair falling flat after it's been curled. Instead, choose a lighter formula, and only apply it to the ends rather than from the roots down. Once you take the braids out, flip your hair upside down and spray with texturizing spray.

"If your strands are damp, dry them thoroughly with your blow-dryer, and lightly run more styling cream through your hair before you start curling." To get that beach girl waves using a curling iron, you’ll need a large curling iron with a diameter of 1″ or larger. Start by preparing dry hair with a heat-protecting styling cream.

The voluminous style has been worn by everyone from Marilyn Monroe in the 1960s to Jennifer Lopez in 2024. "Hollywood waves typically describe big, voluminous, S-curl waves that are even and consistent throughout the hair," hairstylist Jerome Lordet explains. You can get the style with a straightener, curling iron, wand — or without heat. This pre-styling routine sets the stage for achieving flawless waves and ensures your hair stays healthy and hydrated throughout the styling process.

Beachy Waves

As mentioned above, different hot tools will create different types of styles and are better for certain hair types. For example, a 3/4" barrel will create much tighter waves than a 2" barrel will. Then, you need to consider your hair type and factor such as whether or not you have color-treated hair as that could determine the heat setting you pick. Scrunching can enhance and define natural curls, giving them a more textured and voluminous appearance.

Feathered Beach Waves

Then, take 1″ sections of hair and curl the mid-lengths and ends using the curling iron. So, our journey through transforming straight hair into captivating waves has been nothing short of a styling adventure. From understanding your hair type to mastering the art of braiding and selecting the right products, you’ve gained a toolkit for creating and maintaining beautiful waves.

Let Demi Lovato's long, undulating tresses serve as your inspo. Long layers beginning just below the chin help to bring out your natural waves and lend movement. Hats off to Adele for taking our breath away with her voice and her red-carpet beauty looks. Here, she's sporting long layers and a medium-length style with tons of volume that frames her face perfectly. Especially ideal if your hair is lacking in the volume department, a wavy lob like this one on Olivia Culpo works well with blunt ends and a side-swept parting. The slight bend, damp ends, and unstructured part complement the long length perfectly.

This comes as no surprise given the style’s versatility and cool aesthetic. On freshly washed hair, Washington suggests rubbing a dime-to-nickel sized amount of pomade or wax throughout the hair. Be careful to not overuse products, especially on the the first day, and remember a little can go a long way. "You can also use a blow-dryer with a ceramic brush, which will result in a much less defined yet elegant look," Cosmillo says. Finish with dry shampoo at the roots and texturizing spray through the ends for volume, and a drop of hydrating oil on the ends to keep hair looking healthy.

Heavy-hold products may weigh down your hair and ultimately work against you. “Start at your roots and wrap towards the end in a spiral shape, as this will give you a lift! ” Avoid the urge to immediately brush out your curls or separate them with your fingers—Journo says to leave the curls the way they are until you’re done curling entirely. If your hair is notorious for falling flat after curling, she suggests pinning each curl in place loosely as you wait for it to set. If you’re looking for a cute hairstyle that will give you waves for the next day, we love space buns. Space buns are like pigtails but with the pigtails twisted into buns, they also give you the perfect beach wave.

17 Best Shampoos for Frizzy Hair in 2024 to Smooth Strands

best shampoo and conditioner for frizzy hair

It’s also great for a wide range of hair types, Olivia says, including natural hair. If you’re not heat styling but still want to target frizz, Atkin says to elevate your post-shower, damp hair regimen with conditioning, moisture-replenishing products (like the ones above). When air-drying, foregoing a wrap altogether is key to minimizing frizz, but if you'd prefer your floors to stay dry, Atkin suggests using a microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt to wring out the excess water. First, the Lab evaluates product claims and formulas, and then they label-mask the chosen products and distribute them to testers across the country.

Best for Sensitive Scalps

There are harsh chemicals like SLS and sodium chloride, plus minor problems like artificial fragrances. Proceed with caution and consider an alternative like Maui the Maui shampoo. However, although it’s less chemical-laden than other shampoos built to tackle frizz, it’s not quite perfect. The shampoo does contain artificial fragrances and small concentrations of alcohol. Glycerin attracts moisture into the hair and seals it in to prevent dryness and resulting frizziness, while citric acid nourishes your hair to stop it from becoming dry.

Naturally, Canale is a fan of his namesake clarifying shampoo, but I’m impressed with its vegan formula and relaxing lavender scent. In addition, hydrating components like shea butter, glycerin, and soybean oil help balance out the drying properties found in gentle cleansing agents from coconuts. My best overall frizzy hair shampoo is from Virtue, a brand adored by Halle Berry, Jen Garner, and more Hollywood stars.

Post-shower, I could comb my fingers through my hair without it getting tangled, which, to me, signifies a job well done. Finally, I'd be remiss not to mention the product's gentle, non-stripping formula, which is enriched with conditioning jojoba oil and peppermint oil, which has been found to promote hair growth. The Biolage Ultra Hydra Source Shampoo features a creamy vegan formula loaded with plant-based ingredients.

2, 3…. Smooth Hair

Both the shampoo and conditioner are also formulated with marine-derived polysaccharides that naturally protect against friction-causing buildup from harsh pollutants. With all that junk and friction removed, amaranth peptides can go to work more easily, providing some extra plump to your hair that further enhances fullness. Dry, dull hair is no match for this all-in-one shampoo that doubles as a conditioner.

Bur Bur Growing Season Botanical Hair Treatment

I like to think of it as more of a dry oil than a traditional hair spray. For maximum frizz control, Hill suggests using not just a single styling product, but the full shebang with an anti-frizz shampoo and anti-frizz conditioner, too. She says to think of them as "setting the foundation of fighting frizz." As shopping experts, our only job is to help you find a winning product.

SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Hair Masque

One of Rubenstein's favorite smoothing shampoos, this olive extract and vitamin E-infused formula dramatically improves hair elasticity. Elasticity refers to the amount of moisture your hair retains—strong strands with high elasticity can stretch without losing their original shape. This means less breakage and frizz, plus it makes styling your hair so much easier. Tame unruly hair and fend off frizz from the get-go, starting in the shower.

Best Shampoos for Dry Hair

The Pureology Hydrate Sheer Shampoo boasts a creamy, fine hair-approved formula and is color-safe. This shampoo is enriched with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and squalane. Caring for frizzy hair doesn’t stop the second you exit the shower (or bath). If you really want to go the extra mile, you should also gear your evening routine toward minimizing frizziness. The shampoo also has glycerin and citric acid, two of the best ingredients out there for nourishing your hair and making those locks as luscious as possible.

Getting your wash day routine on lock is the first and most important step towards fighting frizz. For any hair from straight to curly, Briogeo’s frizz-smoothing shampoo claims to fight frizz up to 48 hours. The sulfate- and silicone-free formula rinses away excess oil and dirt while the rosehip, argan and coconut oils lock in hydration and seal out humidity—which everyone knows is the number one culprit for fuzziness.

Its light hold is perfect for blowouts and updos where you still want a bit of movement, but if I want a little stronger staying power for my style, I'll finish with a bit of Oribe's Superfine Hair Spray to get the best of both worlds. Though I'll admit it's a bit pricey, I definitely think it's worth the splurge. This is a fan favorite in the salons right now, and it's easy to see why the people have spoken. Color Wow Dream Coat not only helps you create the smooth, glass hair look that people having been raving about, but it also shields the hair from excess moisture and humidity that may get into the hair and cause frizziness. We updated this article in May 2023 to add new smoothing shampoos, complete with more specifications and real-tester reviews, and also delete outdated oldies, just for you.

Applying a solid shampoo isn’t much different from using a regular shampoo, according to our experts. First, ensure your hair is very wet before applying the product, and you’ll need to wet the bar as well. Then, either rub the bar directly onto your hair or lather it in your hands. Make sure the shampoo is really well distributed, and then rinse thoroughly, says Jordan. If you’re new to solid shampoo and looking to try it out, we spoke to experts about the benefits of a shampoo bar and how to shop for the best one for your hair.

Dry, thick hair types will benefit the most from using this shampoo and conditioner. While washing, we loved that they had a thick texture—so we only needed a little bit to cover our entire head. The conditioner took some time to work into our hair, but we did appreciate how well it nourished our hair. Neither of them caused irritation, and our hair felt clean and smooth after washing. Since our hair had nothing weighing it down, it dried quickly and looked fresh and healthy after styling. It felt like it was really getting all the dirt and oils out every wash, so much so that we were excited to wash our hair again and again because we knew we would get that clean feeling.

Transcribing Francis Austen's memoir

jane austen house

In September, Dunford’s team instituted "Austen Wednesdays," a weekly chat with an author or expert on some aspect of Austen's work or age that regularly sees upwards of 1,000 views on YouTube, as well as a running series in which actors read famous passages from the novels. Jane Austen’s House is a historic property with low doorways and uneven surfaces underfoot. The ground floor and outbuildings are fully accessible and we have an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities. Unfortunately, the upstairs of the main house is currently only accessible by climbing a historic wooden staircase although the upstairs can now be viewed virtually via our 360° virtual tour.

Chawton is also a stone’s throw from the historic city of Winchester, in which you can visit several other significant Austen sites, including Jane Austen’s grave. Over the last 70 years many parts of the House have been restored and the interior has been restyled to take it back to the time when the Austens lived here. Today, we continue to undertake repairs and maintenance that will help to preserve the House for generations to come. Mrs Austen and Cassandra continued to live at the House for the rest of their lives. After Cassandra’s death in 1845, the house returned to the Chawton Estate; it was divided into three dwellings for estate workers and was also used as an estate office and a working men’s club.

As a result, the family was thrust into financial straits; the three women moved from place to place, skipping between the homes of various family members to rented flats. It was not until 1809 that they were able to settle into a stable living situation at Austen's brother Edward's cottage in Chawton. Austen spent much of her early adulthood helping run the family home, playing piano, attending church, and socializing with neighbors. Her nights and weekends often involved cotillions, and as a result, she became an accomplished dancer. On other evenings, she would choose a novel from the shelf and read it aloud to her family, occasionally one she had written herself.

A Day Trip to Jane Austen’s House (& Chawton House)

Manydown Park was destroyed in the 1960s, but Manydown Farm Shop, located on the estate, offers an authentic slice of the Hampshire countryside—complete with homemade meat pies, local Loosehanger cheese and lamb raised on Manydown’s 200-acre farm. At the time of opening, the House was still occupied by tenants and only the front room was publicly accessible. The Jane Austen Society was instrumental in funding repairs and in building the Museum’s collection. Jane Austen’s House holds an unparalleled collection of objects relating to Jane Austen’s life and works, her family circle and her legacy.

The museum is displaying a letter Jane wrote to her sister Cassandra when she received her first copy of the book, costumes from the 1995 BBC television production and a contemporary art exhibition inspired by the novel. The house’s most famous association is with Jane Austen, whose brother Edward, inherited the house when distant family members Thomas and Catherine Knight, made him their heir. Edward offered the bailiff’s residence, five minutes’ walk from Chawton House, to his mother and sisters, Jane and Cassandra, and it was there, now the Jane Austen’s House Museum, where Jane enjoyed the most prolific period of her writing life. The memoir is one of the latest acquisitions in Jane Austen’s House Museum’s unparalleled collection – which includes letters, jewellery and first-editions of Jane’s novels – and the museum is eager to publish the results.

If a party have requested a guided tour, please contact us and we will be happy to arrange a tour with our expert in-house guides. Whether you are inspired by women’s literature, keen to follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen in Hampshire, looking to explore the gardens, or simply to enjoy lunch in The Old Kitchen Tearoom, our friendly staff and volunteers will give you a warm welcome. Immersive audio and subtle historic scents throughout the House evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era. The gentle sound of piano music drifts from the Drawing Room, the buzz of quiet conversation, excerpts from Jane’s novels and letters, drifts down from the bedroom. The chiming of the grandfather clock and the creak of footsteps on the historic floorboards all add to the charm and atmosphere of this special place.

Chawton House: home to early womens writing

jane austen house

Jane lived in this house for the last eight years of her life, but in May 1817, after a period of ill health, she left Chawton to seek medical treatment in Winchester. She died two months later, on 18 July 1817, and was buried in Winchester Cathedral. In 1769 the House was purchased by the Knight family, distant relatives of the Austens, and became part of their Chawton estate, occupied by the bailiff. When Mr and Mrs Knight did not have children of their own, they formally adopted Jane’s brother Edward as their heir. "Ah! there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort," declares Mrs. Elton in Austen's 1815 novel Emma.

She continued to write, developing her style in more ambitious works such as Lady Susan, another epistolary story about a manipulative woman who uses her sexuality, intelligence and charm to have her way with others. Austen also started to write some of her future major works, the first called Elinor and Marianne, another story told as a series of letters, which would eventually be published as Sense and Sensibility. She began drafts of First Impressions, which would later be published as Pride and Prejudice, and Susan, later published as Northanger Abbey by Jane's brother, Henry, following Austen's death.

In 1940 Dorothy Darnell, a local woman, founded the Jane Austen Society with the aim of saving the House. The Society attracted the attention of a benefactor, Mr. T.E. Carpenter, who personally acquired the House for the sum of £3000, and endowed it to the nation  as a permanent memorial to his son, Philip Carpenter, who had been killed in action in Italy in 1944, aged just 22. With the house's more tactile offerings now off-limits, Dunford and her team set about creating a new kind of Austen experience, one less rooted in touch and more rooted in atmosphere—including the clever deployment of hidden audio players throughout the house. "I've overseen a strange period" in the house's life, Dunford says, with smiling understatement, via Zoom. All other dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the gardens and outside the tearoom, where water bowls are available for them.

They have been translated into dozens of languages and are regularly adapted for film, TV and theatre. They have spawned sequels, prequels and spin offs, and there are countless festivals, clubs and societies in her honour. Admission to Chawton House with a day or annual ticket includes entry to the House, the Gardens, and our current exhibition. Outside tour guides are not permitted to conduct guided tours at Chawton House.

Smaller and more intimate than Chawton House, your journey through the building will take you through the simple life that she, her mother, and her two sisters lived in from the drawing-room to the dining room, and bedrooms. You will follow a linear path through the house after a short introduction from the staff and end at the gift shop and library. There are numerous copies of Austen’s books to purchase as well as other souvenirs.

How to Get to Chawton

"[Austen is] an extraordinary writer in that she encourages this sense of intimacy with the reader," Sutherland says via Zoom. Kathryn Sutherland, a celebrated professor at Oxford and the Austen House's education trustee, says that the house's new exhibits offer readers new avenues to explore what is often a deeply personal relationship with Austen and her novels. Her name is a byword for wit, social observation and insight into the lives of women in the early 19th century.

Jane was a frequent guest at the house, where she spent time playing with her favorite nephew, George; sitting in the library; and revising Sense and Sensibility. Visitors to the House can freely explore Jane’s home and beautiful cottage garden whilst learning about her life through exhibitions and displays. Hands-on activities for all ages can be found alongside in-depth information panels and family objects, housed in the rooms that Jane would have known. Ever fascinated by the world of stories, Austen began to write in bound notebooks.

jane austen house

This inspiring Hampshire cottage was Jane Austen’s home and the birthplace of her six beloved novels. Jane Austen’s House Museum is located in the rural village of Chawton near the town of Alton in Hampshire. The historic city of Winchester is just over 15 miles to the south west of the village, and the market town of Farnham is 10 miles to the west. Formally known as Chawton Cottage, the house in which Austen spent her final years was originally built in the late 17th century. Originally home to local farmers in the area, the house briefly became a public inn from 1781 to 1787, before being let by Austen’s elder brother Edward Austen Knight to Bailiff Bridger Steward after two murders were reported at the house.

Austen frequently dined at Chawton House, and the Knight family dining table where Austen sat is still there to be seen today. Many people believe that Mr Knightley’s Donwell Abbey in Austen’s Emma was modelled upon Chawton House. A visit to Chawton in Alton, Hampshire is a perfect day out for Jane Austen fans. Chawton offers everything from a Jane Austen trail to follow, her own home, and an Austen themed tea-room, to the magnificent Chawton Estate owned by Austen’s brother (frequented by Austen herself often). Jane Austen’s House is a registered charity in receipt of no regular public funding. We are hugely grateful to our visitors and our audiences worldwide, for all their support.

In 1940, a local woman, Dorothy Darnell, founded the Jane Austen Society with the aim of saving the House. The Society attracted the attention of a benefactor, Mr T E Carpenter, who personally acquired the House for the sum of £3,000 and endowed it to the nation as a permanent memorial to his son, Philip Carpenter, who had been killed in action in Italy in 1944, aged just 22. Mr Carpenter set up the Jane Austen Memorial Trust to run the House as a museum, and it was formally opened by the Duke of Wellington in July 1949.

While not widely known in her own time, Jane Austen's comic novels of love among the landed gentry gained popularity after 1869, and her reputation skyrocketed in the 20th century. Her novels, including Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, are considered literary classics, bridging the gap between romance and realism. The hope is that the rare document could shed some new light on the family life of one of English literature's most beloved writers. Indeed, once all of the entries are compiled, the final transcription will be published online and made available to the public. The museum acquired the manuscript at an auction in 2023 from Austen’s descendents.

Alternatively, a taxi service or the number 64 Stagecoach service that runs daily between Alton train station can be used for the onward journey. Today, Jane Austen’s House is one of the most important literary sites in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. Since her passing, Austen’s novels have become hugely popular , widely published and today, many are often listed as compulsory reading on school curriculum.

“At that moment she felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something! ” Some scholars credit the palatial Chatsworth House—home of the Duke and Duchess of Cavendish for 16 generations—as Austen’s inspiration behind the fictional estate. In fact, the 2005 film version of Pride & Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley, cast Chatsworth in the role. Visitors can peruse the house’s 30 rooms, stroll the 105-acre garden or take in the extensive private art collection—including the dramatic sculpture gallery featured in the Hollywood film.

Cozumel Quintana Roo Mexico, Riviera Maya cruise port schedule

cozumel cruise ship port map

There’s an extensive menu to peruse and a sandy path down to the sea for exploring after lunch. This beach is tucked away on the less popular east side of the island. Here, you can rent a hammock or lounger or use your belongings for sitting privately and spending time alone in paradise.

Cruise and shore excursions

From here it’s a pretty 1,5 mile walk to the city’s bars, restaurants and downtown San Miguel along the nice waterfront promenade. Some of the things to do is the San Miguel Walking Tour and of course shopping should be on your list as well! At about 10 minutes drive you will find the Chankannab National Park as well as several beaches. Car Rentals can be found at 5 blocks from the pier you will find a car rental (Smart Car and Alamo).

Shopping within Walking Distance

Yes, Mexico definitely has problems, but for the most part those violent stories you hear don’t occur in Cozumel. Any harm to cruise ship passengers on the island is very rare. The Two Ports Are SeparateIf you arrive at the International Pier or Puerta Maya Pier, you’ll see that they are right next to each other. Even so, they are separated and only available to passengers on ships in that port. To be honest, they offer similar amenities so if you visit one, you’ll get much of the same experience as visiting the other.

Enjoy a Beautiful Beach Day (best beaches in Cozumel)

Walking from the ship to the port area can be a lengthy walk — especially in the heat and humidity. Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship. Built on the long reputation of Casa del Mar Dive Hotel, the Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a relatively small beach club situated very close to the southern cruise ships. It’s got a huge bar, a full menu, music, great lounge chairs, water and snorkeling access, and a nice pool and hot tub. For the savvy cruiser that has visited Cozumel before and explored the main attractions, Playa del Carmen is a great alternative and easy to get to on a ferry (departures every hour, costing around US $10 each way).

Tulum, a major Mayan historical site, is inland but close enough to explore when cruising (1.5-hour on a ship excursion or 2 hours on your own) and a must see for those interested in archeology. Tulum is around 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen and you will need to get on a ferry to this beautiful town inland (another 45 minutes) - count with at least 6 hours if you wish to do it on your own. I am the creator of an e-book “Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide“, the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports, & YouTube channel @AdventourBegins.

Puerta Maya and International Terminal

When cruise ships anchor, tender boats will moor at smaller piers next to Puerta Maya or the International Pier. Other popular beaches are Paradise Beach, Playa Palancar, Playa Mia. Cozumel features several great resorts / eco-parks, often included in cruise lines' shore excursion offerings.

Cozumel is known for its incredible and plentiful coral reefs, and following are a few of the best snorkeling locations in Cozumel and possibly the world. Mr. Sanchos Beach Club, located about 20 minutes from downtown San Miguel, offers an all-inclusive day pass to travelers looking to get the most out of the relaxing beach life in Cozumel. What’s the number one thing you should do when visiting Cozumel? If you’re looking to enjoy a full beach/pool day, there are a ton of beach clubs from which to choose. The farthest port from downtown San Miguel is Puerta Maya, about five miles south. This is where Carnival ships dock and most of their brands dock here, too.

Activities and Attractions Near the Piers

This is also the pier of the ferry’s between Playa Del Carmen and the island. There are plenty of taxis here and you are within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars. On the mainland side, the ferry docks a 5-minute walk from Playa del Carmen city center and its shopping streets, attractions, bars, and restaurants. Plaza Playacar is the place where you usually meet your tour guides for the mainland tours, and it is located within a 5-minute walk from the main square.

cozumel cruise ship port map

If you want truly spectacular Mayan ruins you can still see them during your cruise to Cozumel, but since they are on the main land of Mexico it will be an all-day event which will require a ferry ride. Chichen Itza (recently named one of the 7 wonders of the world) and Tulum are the main Mayan sites you can see. Even if you just want to rent or bring along some snorkeling gear you will want to check out these pristine waters at one of the many coral reef locations. I recommend grabbing a local taxi right at the cruise port to make sure you’re getting the real deal.

It’s not a huge factory, but you get to see how the chocolate is locally made and then you get to make some yourself. And of course the best part is sampling the chocolate after you are done. The first time I went to Cozumel I brought my own snorkel gear and just pulled over at random places to check out the water.

Exploring beyond the well-trodden paths can lead you to uncover some truly enchanting experiences – from secluded beaches to authentic local taco spots. In other words, Puerta Maya is also very close and within easy walking distance of the Del Mar Latino Beach Club in Cozumel, the Park Royal Resort, Sunset Bar on the waterfront, and all the others listed above. The Atlantis Submarine Cozumel experience is another of the many activities on the island that’s great for families.

Sometimes, ships will have to anchor just offshore if it’s a very busy day with 7 or 8 cruise ships coming in. In these cases the ships will tender passengers to some of the smaller piers near Puerta Maya. There are no large beach clubs in the downtown area, but that doesn’t mean cruise passengers can’t find a nice place to take a quick dip near Punta Langosta. And you don’t need a snorkeling excursion to experience some of Cozumel’s best-known water activities. This actually means you wont be docking at all, but you will tendering.

That can mean tens of thousands of cruise passengers in town on the same day. In front of the terminal, you’ll spot a spacious area featuring a large Margaritaville, usually filled with cheerful people dancing salsa, drinking tequila, or eating delicious Mexican food. There are plenty of tour booths, shops, several bars, and restaurants (Bar Mandy, Senor Frog’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp…) in this area. This is where you meet your tour operators when joining the shore excursions. Normally they hold the signs with tour names, so you can easily spot them. This terminal is located less than a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel downtown (around 4 km/2.5 miles).

Instead of having to get a taxi back and forth from the port, restaurants, bars, and shops are all within walking distance. Since Jean-Jacques Cousteau 'discovered' Cozumel's spectacular scuba sites, when he first landed here in 1961, all sorts of water-sports and scuba, in particular, are offered by a plethora of local small business. For those that are not attracted by the wonders of ocean depths, snorkeling, fishing or just sea splashing in stunning beaches are minutes away from the cruise port. Naturally, most of these beaches have bars, restaurants, and activities that range from the most simple paddle boards to para-sailing or jet skiing.
