Transcribing Francis Austen's memoir

jane austen house

In September, Dunford’s team instituted "Austen Wednesdays," a weekly chat with an author or expert on some aspect of Austen's work or age that regularly sees upwards of 1,000 views on YouTube, as well as a running series in which actors read famous passages from the novels. Jane Austen’s House is a historic property with low doorways and uneven surfaces underfoot. The ground floor and outbuildings are fully accessible and we have an accessible toilet with baby changing facilities. Unfortunately, the upstairs of the main house is currently only accessible by climbing a historic wooden staircase although the upstairs can now be viewed virtually via our 360° virtual tour.

Chawton is also a stone’s throw from the historic city of Winchester, in which you can visit several other significant Austen sites, including Jane Austen’s grave. Over the last 70 years many parts of the House have been restored and the interior has been restyled to take it back to the time when the Austens lived here. Today, we continue to undertake repairs and maintenance that will help to preserve the House for generations to come. Mrs Austen and Cassandra continued to live at the House for the rest of their lives. After Cassandra’s death in 1845, the house returned to the Chawton Estate; it was divided into three dwellings for estate workers and was also used as an estate office and a working men’s club.

As a result, the family was thrust into financial straits; the three women moved from place to place, skipping between the homes of various family members to rented flats. It was not until 1809 that they were able to settle into a stable living situation at Austen's brother Edward's cottage in Chawton. Austen spent much of her early adulthood helping run the family home, playing piano, attending church, and socializing with neighbors. Her nights and weekends often involved cotillions, and as a result, she became an accomplished dancer. On other evenings, she would choose a novel from the shelf and read it aloud to her family, occasionally one she had written herself.

A Day Trip to Jane Austen’s House (& Chawton House)

Manydown Park was destroyed in the 1960s, but Manydown Farm Shop, located on the estate, offers an authentic slice of the Hampshire countryside—complete with homemade meat pies, local Loosehanger cheese and lamb raised on Manydown’s 200-acre farm. At the time of opening, the House was still occupied by tenants and only the front room was publicly accessible. The Jane Austen Society was instrumental in funding repairs and in building the Museum’s collection. Jane Austen’s House holds an unparalleled collection of objects relating to Jane Austen’s life and works, her family circle and her legacy.

The museum is displaying a letter Jane wrote to her sister Cassandra when she received her first copy of the book, costumes from the 1995 BBC television production and a contemporary art exhibition inspired by the novel. The house’s most famous association is with Jane Austen, whose brother Edward, inherited the house when distant family members Thomas and Catherine Knight, made him their heir. Edward offered the bailiff’s residence, five minutes’ walk from Chawton House, to his mother and sisters, Jane and Cassandra, and it was there, now the Jane Austen’s House Museum, where Jane enjoyed the most prolific period of her writing life. The memoir is one of the latest acquisitions in Jane Austen’s House Museum’s unparalleled collection – which includes letters, jewellery and first-editions of Jane’s novels – and the museum is eager to publish the results.

If a party have requested a guided tour, please contact us and we will be happy to arrange a tour with our expert in-house guides. Whether you are inspired by women’s literature, keen to follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen in Hampshire, looking to explore the gardens, or simply to enjoy lunch in The Old Kitchen Tearoom, our friendly staff and volunteers will give you a warm welcome. Immersive audio and subtle historic scents throughout the House evoke the atmosphere of a bygone era. The gentle sound of piano music drifts from the Drawing Room, the buzz of quiet conversation, excerpts from Jane’s novels and letters, drifts down from the bedroom. The chiming of the grandfather clock and the creak of footsteps on the historic floorboards all add to the charm and atmosphere of this special place.

Chawton House: home to early womens writing

jane austen house

Jane lived in this house for the last eight years of her life, but in May 1817, after a period of ill health, she left Chawton to seek medical treatment in Winchester. She died two months later, on 18 July 1817, and was buried in Winchester Cathedral. In 1769 the House was purchased by the Knight family, distant relatives of the Austens, and became part of their Chawton estate, occupied by the bailiff. When Mr and Mrs Knight did not have children of their own, they formally adopted Jane’s brother Edward as their heir. "Ah! there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort," declares Mrs. Elton in Austen's 1815 novel Emma.

She continued to write, developing her style in more ambitious works such as Lady Susan, another epistolary story about a manipulative woman who uses her sexuality, intelligence and charm to have her way with others. Austen also started to write some of her future major works, the first called Elinor and Marianne, another story told as a series of letters, which would eventually be published as Sense and Sensibility. She began drafts of First Impressions, which would later be published as Pride and Prejudice, and Susan, later published as Northanger Abbey by Jane's brother, Henry, following Austen's death.

In 1940 Dorothy Darnell, a local woman, founded the Jane Austen Society with the aim of saving the House. The Society attracted the attention of a benefactor, Mr. T.E. Carpenter, who personally acquired the House for the sum of £3000, and endowed it to the nation  as a permanent memorial to his son, Philip Carpenter, who had been killed in action in Italy in 1944, aged just 22. With the house's more tactile offerings now off-limits, Dunford and her team set about creating a new kind of Austen experience, one less rooted in touch and more rooted in atmosphere—including the clever deployment of hidden audio players throughout the house. "I've overseen a strange period" in the house's life, Dunford says, with smiling understatement, via Zoom. All other dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the gardens and outside the tearoom, where water bowls are available for them.

They have been translated into dozens of languages and are regularly adapted for film, TV and theatre. They have spawned sequels, prequels and spin offs, and there are countless festivals, clubs and societies in her honour. Admission to Chawton House with a day or annual ticket includes entry to the House, the Gardens, and our current exhibition. Outside tour guides are not permitted to conduct guided tours at Chawton House.

Smaller and more intimate than Chawton House, your journey through the building will take you through the simple life that she, her mother, and her two sisters lived in from the drawing-room to the dining room, and bedrooms. You will follow a linear path through the house after a short introduction from the staff and end at the gift shop and library. There are numerous copies of Austen’s books to purchase as well as other souvenirs.

How to Get to Chawton

"[Austen is] an extraordinary writer in that she encourages this sense of intimacy with the reader," Sutherland says via Zoom. Kathryn Sutherland, a celebrated professor at Oxford and the Austen House's education trustee, says that the house's new exhibits offer readers new avenues to explore what is often a deeply personal relationship with Austen and her novels. Her name is a byword for wit, social observation and insight into the lives of women in the early 19th century.

Jane was a frequent guest at the house, where she spent time playing with her favorite nephew, George; sitting in the library; and revising Sense and Sensibility. Visitors to the House can freely explore Jane’s home and beautiful cottage garden whilst learning about her life through exhibitions and displays. Hands-on activities for all ages can be found alongside in-depth information panels and family objects, housed in the rooms that Jane would have known. Ever fascinated by the world of stories, Austen began to write in bound notebooks.

jane austen house

This inspiring Hampshire cottage was Jane Austen’s home and the birthplace of her six beloved novels. Jane Austen’s House Museum is located in the rural village of Chawton near the town of Alton in Hampshire. The historic city of Winchester is just over 15 miles to the south west of the village, and the market town of Farnham is 10 miles to the west. Formally known as Chawton Cottage, the house in which Austen spent her final years was originally built in the late 17th century. Originally home to local farmers in the area, the house briefly became a public inn from 1781 to 1787, before being let by Austen’s elder brother Edward Austen Knight to Bailiff Bridger Steward after two murders were reported at the house.

Austen frequently dined at Chawton House, and the Knight family dining table where Austen sat is still there to be seen today. Many people believe that Mr Knightley’s Donwell Abbey in Austen’s Emma was modelled upon Chawton House. A visit to Chawton in Alton, Hampshire is a perfect day out for Jane Austen fans. Chawton offers everything from a Jane Austen trail to follow, her own home, and an Austen themed tea-room, to the magnificent Chawton Estate owned by Austen’s brother (frequented by Austen herself often). Jane Austen’s House is a registered charity in receipt of no regular public funding. We are hugely grateful to our visitors and our audiences worldwide, for all their support.

In 1940, a local woman, Dorothy Darnell, founded the Jane Austen Society with the aim of saving the House. The Society attracted the attention of a benefactor, Mr T E Carpenter, who personally acquired the House for the sum of £3,000 and endowed it to the nation as a permanent memorial to his son, Philip Carpenter, who had been killed in action in Italy in 1944, aged just 22. Mr Carpenter set up the Jane Austen Memorial Trust to run the House as a museum, and it was formally opened by the Duke of Wellington in July 1949.

While not widely known in her own time, Jane Austen's comic novels of love among the landed gentry gained popularity after 1869, and her reputation skyrocketed in the 20th century. Her novels, including Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, are considered literary classics, bridging the gap between romance and realism. The hope is that the rare document could shed some new light on the family life of one of English literature's most beloved writers. Indeed, once all of the entries are compiled, the final transcription will be published online and made available to the public. The museum acquired the manuscript at an auction in 2023 from Austen’s descendents.

Alternatively, a taxi service or the number 64 Stagecoach service that runs daily between Alton train station can be used for the onward journey. Today, Jane Austen’s House is one of the most important literary sites in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. Since her passing, Austen’s novels have become hugely popular , widely published and today, many are often listed as compulsory reading on school curriculum.

“At that moment she felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something! ” Some scholars credit the palatial Chatsworth House—home of the Duke and Duchess of Cavendish for 16 generations—as Austen’s inspiration behind the fictional estate. In fact, the 2005 film version of Pride & Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley, cast Chatsworth in the role. Visitors can peruse the house’s 30 rooms, stroll the 105-acre garden or take in the extensive private art collection—including the dramatic sculpture gallery featured in the Hollywood film.

Cozumel Quintana Roo Mexico, Riviera Maya cruise port schedule

cozumel cruise ship port map

There’s an extensive menu to peruse and a sandy path down to the sea for exploring after lunch. This beach is tucked away on the less popular east side of the island. Here, you can rent a hammock or lounger or use your belongings for sitting privately and spending time alone in paradise.

Cruise and shore excursions

From here it’s a pretty 1,5 mile walk to the city’s bars, restaurants and downtown San Miguel along the nice waterfront promenade. Some of the things to do is the San Miguel Walking Tour and of course shopping should be on your list as well! At about 10 minutes drive you will find the Chankannab National Park as well as several beaches. Car Rentals can be found at 5 blocks from the pier you will find a car rental (Smart Car and Alamo).

Shopping within Walking Distance

Yes, Mexico definitely has problems, but for the most part those violent stories you hear don’t occur in Cozumel. Any harm to cruise ship passengers on the island is very rare. The Two Ports Are SeparateIf you arrive at the International Pier or Puerta Maya Pier, you’ll see that they are right next to each other. Even so, they are separated and only available to passengers on ships in that port. To be honest, they offer similar amenities so if you visit one, you’ll get much of the same experience as visiting the other.

Enjoy a Beautiful Beach Day (best beaches in Cozumel)

Walking from the ship to the port area can be a lengthy walk — especially in the heat and humidity. Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship. Built on the long reputation of Casa del Mar Dive Hotel, the Del Mar Latino Beach Club is a relatively small beach club situated very close to the southern cruise ships. It’s got a huge bar, a full menu, music, great lounge chairs, water and snorkeling access, and a nice pool and hot tub. For the savvy cruiser that has visited Cozumel before and explored the main attractions, Playa del Carmen is a great alternative and easy to get to on a ferry (departures every hour, costing around US $10 each way).

Tulum, a major Mayan historical site, is inland but close enough to explore when cruising (1.5-hour on a ship excursion or 2 hours on your own) and a must see for those interested in archeology. Tulum is around 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen and you will need to get on a ferry to this beautiful town inland (another 45 minutes) - count with at least 6 hours if you wish to do it on your own. I am the creator of an e-book “Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide“, the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports, & YouTube channel @AdventourBegins.

Puerta Maya and International Terminal

When cruise ships anchor, tender boats will moor at smaller piers next to Puerta Maya or the International Pier. Other popular beaches are Paradise Beach, Playa Palancar, Playa Mia. Cozumel features several great resorts / eco-parks, often included in cruise lines' shore excursion offerings.

Cozumel is known for its incredible and plentiful coral reefs, and following are a few of the best snorkeling locations in Cozumel and possibly the world. Mr. Sanchos Beach Club, located about 20 minutes from downtown San Miguel, offers an all-inclusive day pass to travelers looking to get the most out of the relaxing beach life in Cozumel. What’s the number one thing you should do when visiting Cozumel? If you’re looking to enjoy a full beach/pool day, there are a ton of beach clubs from which to choose. The farthest port from downtown San Miguel is Puerta Maya, about five miles south. This is where Carnival ships dock and most of their brands dock here, too.

Activities and Attractions Near the Piers

This is also the pier of the ferry’s between Playa Del Carmen and the island. There are plenty of taxis here and you are within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars. On the mainland side, the ferry docks a 5-minute walk from Playa del Carmen city center and its shopping streets, attractions, bars, and restaurants. Plaza Playacar is the place where you usually meet your tour guides for the mainland tours, and it is located within a 5-minute walk from the main square.

cozumel cruise ship port map

If you want truly spectacular Mayan ruins you can still see them during your cruise to Cozumel, but since they are on the main land of Mexico it will be an all-day event which will require a ferry ride. Chichen Itza (recently named one of the 7 wonders of the world) and Tulum are the main Mayan sites you can see. Even if you just want to rent or bring along some snorkeling gear you will want to check out these pristine waters at one of the many coral reef locations. I recommend grabbing a local taxi right at the cruise port to make sure you’re getting the real deal.

It’s not a huge factory, but you get to see how the chocolate is locally made and then you get to make some yourself. And of course the best part is sampling the chocolate after you are done. The first time I went to Cozumel I brought my own snorkel gear and just pulled over at random places to check out the water.

Exploring beyond the well-trodden paths can lead you to uncover some truly enchanting experiences – from secluded beaches to authentic local taco spots. In other words, Puerta Maya is also very close and within easy walking distance of the Del Mar Latino Beach Club in Cozumel, the Park Royal Resort, Sunset Bar on the waterfront, and all the others listed above. The Atlantis Submarine Cozumel experience is another of the many activities on the island that’s great for families.

Sometimes, ships will have to anchor just offshore if it’s a very busy day with 7 or 8 cruise ships coming in. In these cases the ships will tender passengers to some of the smaller piers near Puerta Maya. There are no large beach clubs in the downtown area, but that doesn’t mean cruise passengers can’t find a nice place to take a quick dip near Punta Langosta. And you don’t need a snorkeling excursion to experience some of Cozumel’s best-known water activities. This actually means you wont be docking at all, but you will tendering.

That can mean tens of thousands of cruise passengers in town on the same day. In front of the terminal, you’ll spot a spacious area featuring a large Margaritaville, usually filled with cheerful people dancing salsa, drinking tequila, or eating delicious Mexican food. There are plenty of tour booths, shops, several bars, and restaurants (Bar Mandy, Senor Frog’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp…) in this area. This is where you meet your tour operators when joining the shore excursions. Normally they hold the signs with tour names, so you can easily spot them. This terminal is located less than a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel downtown (around 4 km/2.5 miles).

Instead of having to get a taxi back and forth from the port, restaurants, bars, and shops are all within walking distance. Since Jean-Jacques Cousteau 'discovered' Cozumel's spectacular scuba sites, when he first landed here in 1961, all sorts of water-sports and scuba, in particular, are offered by a plethora of local small business. For those that are not attracted by the wonders of ocean depths, snorkeling, fishing or just sea splashing in stunning beaches are minutes away from the cruise port. Naturally, most of these beaches have bars, restaurants, and activities that range from the most simple paddle boards to para-sailing or jet skiing.

Where Does Royal Caribbean Dock in Cozumel?

cozumel cruise ship port map

I had a chance to visit Cozumel many times on a cruise ship, and every time I tried something different, from dolphin swimming and horseback riding to exploring the world-famous ruins and adventure parks. The only public transportation option is the local ferry from Playa del Carmen, which is air-conditioned and runs from the early morning to late at night. The International Cruise Terminal also has a plethora of shops and eateries directly in the port.

If your ship ports at Punta Langosta, you’ll disembark right into the port’s own mall area, with shops full of souvenirs, as well as some great places to grab lunch or a good Mexican coffee (and homemade baked goods). Cozumel is one of the best shopping destinations in the Caribbean, and you can find almost anything here as long as you venture off the cruise terminals’ interior “mall” areas. If you’re looking for a more private experience, Cabana Beach might be the best place for you. At this beach club, you’ll enjoy your private VIP cabana that can hold up to six guests.

What is at the Cozumel cruise port?

The terminal features a variety of amenities, including a shopping center, a beach club, and a pool complex with water slides and a swim-up bar. You will find these cruise docks offer great services in the cruise terminal in front of the dock. These cruise docks are about 1/2 mile away from each other (see map above). Here you will find a large cruise centre with all you cruise, shopping and tourist facilities right there! Find well known retailers as Del Sol, Diamonds International and Piranha Joe’s right there at the cruise centre.

Cozumel, Mexico

One good thing about being in port is that some spots have free wi-fi that you can use to connect. For example, Pancho’s Backyard at Puerta Maya features free service so you can catch up back home while enjoying a margarita. So you can skip the ship’s Internet and check in from the island.

Pangeaseed: Seawalls in Action

This popular port destination attracts over 3 million travelers looking for the perfect Caribbean getaway. For instance, many a seasoned cruiser will swear that Carnival cruise ships dock exclusively at the Puerta Maya and that Royal Caribbean (and Celebrity ships) only dock at the International Cruise Terminal. As much as this is true (most of the time), the Editor has been on Carnival ships docking at the International Terminal. And, as shown in the photo above, Carnival ships may also dock at the Punta Langosta Terminal.

We’ve found that many of these all-inclusive spots offer up some great food that’s also a nice break from the fare on the cruise ship. Tex-Mex specialties are common, so come ready to eat your fill of tacos, nachos, burritos, and more. For a full list of things to do in Cozumel for your cruise, we’ve covered more than 60 ideas here, ranging from adventure sports to cool indoor activities. Below we have a few of the more popular things for cruise passengers to do, but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg for things to do.

Should I Avoid Certain Souvenirs when Cozumel Shopping?

If you love the idea of scuba diving but you want something a bit simpler, this might be the Cozumel activity for you. You simply “wear” a sort of “sub suit” that allows you to go 20 feet below the water and have unobstructed views of the marine life. And with Cozumel’s reputation for great reefs and pristine coral, this is a great thing to do while cruising to this beautiful island. You don’t’ even have to leave the cruise terminal to find places to shop, but do yourself and the Cozumel locals a favor by venturing out and shopping from local vendors. T-shirts and trinkets are incredible affordable and I haven’t found shop owners to be too pushy compared to other ports. There are over 100,000 people living at this municipality which is just off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula.

Car rentals are offered by all major companies, with their offices located near the cruise piers. These piers are also referred to as the cruise ports and are all located on the western side of the island. Lots of stores and open-air shopping areas are located near the three different cruise ship piers in town, too, so you won’t have to worry about traveling far if you just need something simple. Cozumel is a vibrant and captivating destination, offering something for everyone. Local SpotsIf you head out of the port or you aren’t fed on an excursion, there are a number of local spots where you can pop in an grab a bite to eat. Many of these restaurants near the port are waterfront, so you can sit, relax, and have a drink and meal with a fantastic view. If you’re not an adventurous eater, don’t worry; much of it is similar to what you’d find in the United States as many flavors have been adapted to please American tastes. One plus is that the food always seems fresher than what’s on the ship or back home. For lunch you aren’t likely to see fine dining, but a fun “beachy” lunch is always tasty.

Señor Frog’s, located just a short walk from the International Cruise Terminal, is an ideal spot to savor delicious food and a lively, festive vibe.
